🚀 5 Must-Ask Questions Before Hiring a Website Agency

Thinking about hiring someone to do your website?

In this guide, you will find 5 simple must-ask questions that take less than 5 minutes to answer to help you decide on an agency. The best part is that you can more than likely do this research on your own and answer the questions yourself!

Don’t just go for the flashiest portfolio. Ask these five questions to make sure your future website is fast, smart, legal, and lovable.

1. How Fast Is Their Website, Really?

Speed isn’t just a nice-to-have-it affects user experience and your Google ranking.

Here’s what to check on PageSpeed Insights (yes, you can test their site yourself!):

  • ⚡ Mobile Speed: 90–100 is ideal. Slow sites lose visitors. Period.
  • ♿ Accessibility: Should score 100. This ensures people with disabilities can use the site.
  • 🛡️ Best Practices: Also a 100. This covers security, performance, and coding standards.
  • 🔍 SEO: A perfect 100 means they know how to make sites search-engine friendly.

🧠 Red flag: If their own site doesn’t hit these marks, they probably won’t get yours there either.

2. Does Their Site Look Awesome on Mobile?

About 85% of web traffic comes from mobile devices. If their site looks like a cluttered desktop layout shrunk down to phone size… it’s a no-go.

Here’s what to look for:

  • ✅ Clean fonts that are easy to read
  • ✅ Buttons big enough for thumbs (no pinky gymnastics)
  • ✅ No pinching or zooming needed
  • ✅ Fast load time (especially over mobile data)

👀 Pro tip: Open their site on your phone and ask yourself, “Would Grandma be able to see and understand this?”

3. Is It Built for AI Search (AEO) and Traditional SEO?

We’re entering the age of AI Search Engines-think ChatGPT, Bing AI, and Google’s AI Overviews. Your site needs to speak both human and robot.

Ask if they:

  • 🧩 Use Schema Markup (structured data for search engines)
  • 🧠 Optimize for AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) so your content gets picked by AI
  • 🧭 Still follow classic SEO best practices like metadata, internal linking, and keyword strategy.

💡 If your future customers are asking ChatGPT for the “best dog groomer near me,” you want your site to be the answer.

4. Is Their Site ADA Compliant?

If your site isn’t ADA-compliant, it could cost you big.

Why it matters:

  • 👥 Accessibility helps people with visual, hearing, or mobility challenges use your site.
  • ⚖️ It’s the law in the U.S.-just like having ramps at a store entrance.
  • 💸 In 2025, ADA violation lawsuits are expected to cost over $20 billion. The average demand letter: $36,000 per incident.

Ask them:

  • Do they follow WCAG 2.1 guidelines?
  • Does their site have keyboard navigation, alt text for images, and screen reader compatibility?

🌐 Accessibility isn’t just legal protection-it’s good business.

5. Do They Offer Ongoing Support, Training, and Content?

A website isn’t a “set it and forget it” situation. You’ll need updates, content tweaks, and maybe even some hand-holding.

Ask about:

  • 🔧 Maintenance Plans – Do they offer updates, backups, and security patches?
  • 🎓 Training – Can they teach you how to update your site confidently?
  • 🧠 AEO/SEO Content – Will they help you create blog posts, landing pages, and service descriptions that rank well and answer real questions?

💬 If they build it and ghost you, you’re stuck. You want a partner, not a pop-up shop.

🎯 Final Thought:

👉 If their own website doesn’t pass this checklist, they’re not ready to build yours.

This is a tool we built that is free that can give you the scores using Googles Lighthouse Ai Scoring system, which is the standard for websites. It is called iQSiteSpeed.com, and it takes just about a minute to get the score of any website. Be it your current one or an agency you are thinking about hiring.

On the next page, you will see what our score was at iQMarketers.com.

Because of the way that Google measures the speed using a simulated generic mobile phone, site speed can vary up to 7 points. If you are doing a test, you can re-test in say 20 minutes to get a fairly decent sample.

Here is what a good score should look like below. The mobile site speed should be no lower than an 85. And 90 and above is better. The other three scores should be pegged at 100.

Why is this important? Because if your Mobile site speed is slow, you could be losing over 50% of your potential traffic!

Most businesses are not aware of this. But if you are, it can give you a huge competitive edge!

Takes 3 seconds loading the website

Here is another reason why getting a high score is important. If you plan on running any ads, especially Google Ads, they rank the page the ads are going to like this. By fixing your website, you could have it pay for itself in under a month in many cases!

Who do you think is going to win if one site is ranked 10 versus 1?

We hope this helped you in your website building decision process.

The reason why I put this together, is because we have seen far too many people get wrapped around the axle as it were to get their site done, or redone. And we have had to fix literally hundreds of messed up sites over the years.

By finding out the answers to these 5 questions, it can go a long way toward keeping this from happening to you!

If there is anything else we can do to help you, please do not hesitate to get in touch!
